The Silk Road

The Silk Road

[Digg] [Print]

China is known as the first country in the world to invent and produce silk and named as Silk Country in the western countries during the fourth and fifth century B.C. In 138 B.C. the Wu emperor of the Han Dynasty sent Zhang Qian as an envoy to visit western Asia and open up the Silk Road leading from China's Gansu, Xinjiang to Iran and Afghanistan and other Western Asian countries. It is through this road that large quantities of silk were transported to the Central Asian and Mediterranean countries, and then to Europe. The Silk Road has played an important role to improve the friendship between China and the Western countries. There are also other silk roads on land and sea apart from the one mentioned above.
