The imperial examinations system is originated from Sui daynasty, and was improved in Tang dynasty. It's a way to award government positions by the result of the examinations set up by imperial court.

The Imperial Examinations System in Tang Dynasty is classified into Chang Ke and Zhi Ke. Chang Ke was held every year and had subjects of Xiucai, Mingjing and Jinshi respectively and so on. In these examinations, Jinshi is the most difficult one. There was only one or two were selected out from 100 candidates. That's why it was taken seriously by the scholars. Passing Jinshi, the exam subject, successfully was called Jidi. Zhi Ke is the examination temporally convened by the emperor. It also had many species. Zhi Ke was usually managed by the emperor himself. However, it wasn't paid great attention by the scholars, because it's not so regular.

The Imperial Examinations System has taken the big role in the Chinese history. However, it had evolved into a inflexible and rigid system during the Ming and Qing dynasty, which severely bound up the thoughts of Chinese intellectuals, and brought the negative effect to China's development.
