An Epic of Heroes – Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In China the historical figures like Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Cao Cao and Liu Bei are well known to every household, but their knowledge of all these figures comes chiefly from the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The first long novel in the history of Chinese literature, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which narrates historical events and portrays historical figures in the form of literature, is called historical romance or what is today known as historical novel. It is representative of the romantic novels of Chinese history.

In ancient China people thought of novels as trivialities and novelists as inferior to others, so fewer biographies of novelists were in existence. Similarly, very scanty information remained about Luo Guanzhong, the author of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and even his place of birth was still controversial. Generally speaking, Luo Guanzhong (1315-1385) poetic name Huhaisanren (Wanderer Through the Lakes and Seas), was a native of Taiyuan.
